Amish Hamburger Steak Bake: easy, hearty casserole with beef, mushrooms, and mashed potatoes. Ready in under an hour.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups mashed potatoes
- Cheddar cheese, shredded (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a skillet, brown the ground beef with onions and mushrooms. Drain excess fat.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the beef mixture with beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, and frozen vegetables. Season with salt and pepper.
- Spread the mixture in a baking dish.
- Top with mashed potatoes, spreading them evenly over the beef mixture.
- If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, until heated through and the top is golden brown.
- Serve warm.
Notes
For perfect results, avoid skipping the fat drain step. Use hot mashed potatoes so they form a smooth top. If your oven runs hot, check the bake at 25 minutes to prevent over-browning.
